Graphics card manufacturer ATI has come up with
the driver version 10.4(Catalyst 10.4) for it ATI Radeon 5870 which is in close
competition with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 and a lot is being talked about the 2D
or the two dimensional performance that the two deliver but we are more
interested with the 3D performance because we want a better performance in our
games. However, 2D rendering is not less important when we complain about the
slow performance in opening windows, folders and working with Word in
The ATI has gained some good responses with
reference to benchmark testing for 2D performance but still NVIDIA which is
another giant is doing well with its GTX 480 product. These can handle high
refresh rate for the screen as well which is again another factor to good 2D
acceleration. Windows 7 has added a separate hardware 2D acceleration rate but
with a question mark from the experts. Windows XP still competes in terms of 2D
rendering speeds.
So we can conclude by saying that if most of your
computer usage is related to office work which is related to 2D performance of
the computer then go for a graphics card which offers you good 2D performance.
The cards that I mentioned at the beginning of the article offer you good 3D
performance as well if you are still concerned with the 3D performance factors.
Windows 7(using direct X 11) should be the choice for over all system
performance and for 2D performance as well since we are focusing more on the 2D
performance issues. Windows XP is still good in 2D performance.
