A firewall is a program or a service that is designed to protect the resources of a user from external attacks, threats, etc… Likewise in Windows too we find a similar type of firewall known as Windows Firewall. But the name Windows Firewall was applicable with the release of Windows XP service pack 2 in 2004. Prior to this it was known as Internet Connection Firewall. In simple words, Windows Firewall is a protective boundary that monitors and restricts information that travels between your computer and a network or the Internet. This provides a line of defense against someone who might try to access your computer from outside the Windows Firewall without your permission. This program or service came into existence with the introduction of Windows XP; older windows operating system prior to Windows XP didn’t had this firewall feature inbuilt into the operating system. In order to access and configure Windows Firewall, you need to:
- Click on Start
- Click Control Panel
-
From control panel click Security Center
-
In windows security center under manage security
settings for, click on Windows Firewall
- Once the window firewall pop up opens up, you can configure it according to your needs, like you can turn firewall on, you can turn firewall on without any exception (by giving a checkmark in the don’t allow exception checkbox) or you can turn firewall off.
- Once you are done configuring the firewall, click OK to exit and save the changes that you have made.
